If you are considering dental implants, maybe you are wondering if it will be painful; if anesthesia will be needed and if so, what type will be used. For those patients who have anxiety about surgery, or visiting the dentist, the thought of dental pain can make them break out in a cold sweat.
Fortunately, since the procedure of getting dental implants is a surgery, you will definitely be given some kind of anesthesia to make sure you remain comfortable during the procedure. Although you won’t be able to feel the procedure at all no matter what type is used, some dental offices may offer alternative forms of anesthesia that can put you out for the entire procedure for those with severe enough anxiety. However, it is not normally necessary to be completely unconscious to have dental implants installed and some insurances will balk at covering general anesthesia for this procedure.
The type of anesthesia your oral surgeon will administer to you depends upon how many implants you are having placed, the preference of your oral surgeon, and your own personal comfort level.
If you are only having one or two implants placed, you will probably not need general anesthetic. Local anesthetic should allow you to be comfortable while your implants are being placed. However, if, to support your implant, you will need a bone graft surgery in which bone tissue is harvested from elsewhere in your body and placed on your jaw, your oral surgeon might choose to work with you under general anesthesia.
Conscious sedation is another option for patients having dental implant procedures. This method helps you relax and stay calm during your oral surgery and is often combined with the use of a local anesthetic. The sedative used is often administered through a pill or using nitrous oxide gas. Under conscious sedation, you remain aware of your surroundings and can respond to your doctor’s questions and instructions, but will be completely relaxed. This is a great option for those who are anxious about dental procedures.
Though it might seem ideal to have your surgery under general anesthesia, it is normally unnecessary. Local anesthesia is safer and much less likely to produce unpleasant side effects. Be sure to discuss your options for sedation and anesthesia with your oral surgeon to ensure that your experience is as pleasant as possible.
